Under the patronage of Lt. General H.H Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minster and Minster of Interior, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Lt. General Saif Abdullah Al Sha’far, inaugurated on Monday the 2011 Gulf States Global Police Symposium at the Intercontinental Hotel and Resort in Abu Dhabi to be held December 4-7, 2011.

Present at the inauguration ceremony were the United States Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, Deputy Commander of Abu Dhabi police, Major General Staff Obeid Al Hiri Al Kutbi, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Resources and Support Services, Major General Staff Khalifa Harib Al Khaili, police commanders, senior police officers and a number of diplomatic corps members, delegations heads and members of 20 counties and over 50 police organizations.

In his opening address, Al Sha’far conveyed the regards of Sheikh Saif to the audience and his wishes for the success of the symposium.

Promoting international cooperation to train police personnel would effectively contribute to sharpening the expertise of our national employees, said Al Sha’far. Participation of various agencies in this rich symposium proves that we, as leaders, seek to communicate and share expertise with others wishing to achieve the aspirations that serve the interest of our countries and people, he emphasized.

He expressed hope that the symposium will come up with a number of recommendations that help establish police competency and effectiveness of the law enforcement procedures.


The United States of America, as part of the world, is exerting a lot of efforts for security and safety, and is keen to promote cooperation and build partnerships with all countries with the aim of exchanging information and combating all forms of crime particularly human trafficking, smuggling and terrorism, said Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano.

The UAE police is doing a great job and cooperating effectively in information-sharing and training, she pointed out. Police personnel need more training to combat crimes such as human trafficking, fraud and smuggling, she further indicated.

Leroy D. Baca, Sheriff of Los Angles County Sheriff Department expressed his thanks to Abu Dhabi Police for hosting and organizing the symposium, assuring that the symposium is intended to promote professional diplomacy, gaining actual understanding for the present challenges in all regions, and seeking to renew confidence  and ensuring maximum level of safety.

It is with our commitment to police diplomacy that we were able to focus on the present challenges and seek possible opportunities to reach the best options in order for us to collectively work to combat crime, Commander of Abu Dhabi Police Air wing, Brigadier pilot, Mohammed Al Mazrouei, also head of the symposium committee, underlined.

He expressed his delight to work with Sheriff of Los Angles County Sheriff Department in organizing this important gathering.
 
We all wait to avail the benefits  of this symposium through which we aspire to enhance the previous gains and look for new advantages that may contribute to assisting security work worldwide, said Al Sha’far on his paper tilted “ challenges facing security agencies in the UAE” in the first work session.

Numerous speakers representing France, Qatar, Canada and Los Angles Police tackled the benefits and outcomes of the symposium previously held in Los Angles in 2009.
