Police warn against dangers of fireworks

The Abu Dhabi Police have urged parents to ensure the safety of their children from the danger of playing with firecrackers, especially after many kids were injured over the last few years.

Colonel Humaid Saeed Al Afreet, Director of Arms and Explosives Department at the General Directorate for Security and Outlets Affairs of the Abu Dhabi Police, has warned of the hazards caused by playing with crackers during the festive days.

He, however, appreciated the move of some parents and teenagers who had informed the police about the shops and stores selling crackers. “Firecrackers were behind a number of fire accidents which took place over the last years,” he recalled.

Such fires cause injuries and losses and waste the time of police as well as ambulance and medical staff, he said, adding that such matters could be easily avoided by creating a sense of awareness among the people.

He stressed the importance of cooperation from the media with the Security Media Department on educating the public about the hazards of fireworks.
The awareness campaigns, which are launched every year, yield fruit and managed to curb the threat. “The Abu Dhabi Police has organized several awareness lectures at schools on the risks of fireworks.”
