One million and 629 thousand traffic offences registered in 2009
Over speeding rate on Abu Dhabi roads increases by 70%
The Traffic and Patrols Department at Abu Dhabi Police have revealed an increase in speeding offences by 70%. The number of speeding traffic offences was 1,629,000 out of 2, 225,647 total registered traffic offences in Abu Dhabi last year.
According to Colonel Hamad Adeel Al Shamsi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department at ADP non-compliance with speed limits is main cause of traffic accidents which result in deaths and sever injuries.
Non-compliance with speed limits accounted for 33 deaths and 22 severe injuries last year. He confirms that they will intensify integrated Traffic police; under cover patrols, traffic CID and comprehensive police stations traffic control campaigns to curb the phenomenon. Police would concentrate on hot spots round the clock. The aim is to spread awareness among offending motorists. Paying the fine but not changing your behavior is not enough. The offender should blame himself first before being blamed by the Department.
He has warned drivers who do not follow the traffic rules; there will be undercover patrols on city inner roads and highways. Offences like using expired tires, jumping the red light, non-adherence to lanes and traffic signs, non-attentiveness etc will be strictly monitored.
Ministry of Interior launched a campaign in September under the theme "Together to Reduce Traffic Accidents", and it will continue until the end of February. He urged families and parents not to allow their children, who do not have driving licences, to drive. Those who have driving licences are to be directed not to exceed speed limits.
