A delegation from the Ministry of Interior, represented by the Security Center for Geographic Information System Security Center (GIS) in the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters took part in the periodical meeting of the International Consortium for Geographic Information System (GIS) at the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), on both the strategic and technical levels. The meeting was held in South Korea with a governmental sponsorship of Land, Transportation and Marine Affairs Ministry in Korea.

The Ministry also chaired the Specialized Work Group in police, security and general safety fields which was set by an international nomination in the organization. The UAE represented by the GIC security center in the Ministry gained its presidency for the meeting in Exeter in Britain last June.

The Ministry presented a work paper prepared by specialists on geospatial information security in the Ministry’s GIS security center. The paper discussed the importance of building an ecosystem allowing the existence of information and national geographic data as per the best international standards. This proposal led to the formation of a specialized committee in geospatial information, and the attendees of the meeting voted for the GIS security center to chair the committee.

Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Police Central Operations, said winning this position by the Ministry with the aim of forming a work group for the systems and open geospatial data’s standards for the purpose of police, security and general safety fields and heading this committee by the Ministry, reflect the accomplishment of the UAE in gaining a position for itself among the first five states in geospatial and electronic maturity. He valued the support of the police leadership by the active participation in scientific and specialized fields, and the efforts of scientific and specialized institutions in setting policies and standards that support police work.

The UAE delegation, headed by Major Muhammed saleh Al Mansouri, Director of GIS security center, and the membership of Lt. Saif Salem Al Mansouri, Lt. Muhammed Saleh Al Qahtani, and expert Muhammed Al Turmah Abdulrahim, attended the (Smart Geospatial Expo 2012) held on the sidelines of the event, at the Exhibition Center in Seoul in Korea. The exhibition showcases the latest technologies; systems; software and geospatial equipment. Major Korean and Japanese and other companies displayed their products, geospatial solutions, latest digital maps printers, and display screens and maps simulators.

Participating countries in the Smart Geospatial Expo 2012, as part of the smart modern societies section, used the GIS systems by issuing the Seoul Declaration in the exhibition on smart geospatial systems and data, which is in line with the UN 2011 initiative related to high management of international geospatial information aiming to encourage the international cooperation to develop a geospatial information ecosystem. The declaration included launching an international work document to encourage governments and private sector to promote competitiveness among countries in this vital and modern field.

A number of standard specifications were set in the field of open systems and geographic information, in addition to announcing that the UAE GIS security center has passed the international voting with respect to holding the technical and strategic meeting of the organization in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi next March, marking the first time such meeting is held in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
