Abu Dhabi Police warned of the consequences of not practicing sports, in a symposium organized on Thursday by the Sport Committee at the General Directorate of Central Operations in coordination with the Clubs and Sport Activities Department.

Held at the forensics auditorium, the symposium was delivered by Major Dr Rima Al Hosani in presence of Brigadier Ismaeel Al Sirkal, a number of police officers, heads of sections and personnel.

Al Sirakal emphasized that Abu Dhabi Police cares for and supports sports believing in its importance for all personnel. Many sport clubs and gym halls have been established, all facilitates and coaches for various sports have been provided, he further stated.

Practicing sports decreases the risks of developing many chronic and severe diseases, pointed out Dr Rima Al Hosani, Masters Degree holder in sport medicine. The country spends huge of money in treating persons who do not practice sports, she added.

Studies revealed that the diabetes rate in the United Arab Emirates is very high (estimated 20% of local population), and persons suffering from high levels of fats and cholesterol are increasing day by day, matter which she has mainly attributed to not practicing sports.

Half an hour daily is fairly enough to practice some exercises such as jogging, swimming and cycling, she advised, urging all segments of the society to practices sports, especially women who are mostly to suffer from osteoporosis.

Not practicing sports could be a major cause for many diseases and pains, such as backache, bone and vertebral column stiffness, indigestion and ulcers, she said in her presentation.

First Lieutenant Hamad Al Kaabi, physiotherapist at the medical services department, has also offered a series of tips and guidelines on the importance of physiotherapy after developing muscular injuries and fractures while practicing sports.

The symposium ended with discussion between Dr. Rima and the audience who raised many important questions on physical fitness.
