Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Police Central Operations, attended a lecture under the title “the importance of sports for a good health, especially in a lifestyle witnessing a decline in physical activities” organized by the Abu Dhabi Police. The lecture took place in the Forensics Department Hall at the police headquarters.
The lecture was also attended by Brigadier General Ismail Al Sirkal Deputy Director General of Abu Dhabi Police Central Operations and Colonel Anwar Al Mulla, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Director, Chief of Sports Committee in the Central Operations General Department alongside other officers and employees.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Maha Taysir Barakat, Endocrine Gland Specialist at the Imperial College London Diabetes Center, who stressed on the importance of healthy food and exercises to prevent diabetes.
She added that mornings before breakfast are the best times to exercise, noting that a study performed on 15 women proved that liposuction did not lead to eliminating adipose tissue around the liver and the intestines, and that this type of fat is only burnt through exercise.
She commented: “As per the statistics of the International Diabetes Federation, the number of diabetes patients around the world during the last year was 366 million; the number is expected to rise to 552 million by 2030.” She explained that: “Kuwait, Qatar, KSA, Bahrain, and UAE were among the top 10 countries in the number of diabetes patients compared to their population. As the numbers of the International Diabetes Federation indicate, the UAE is ranked 10th worldwide with a percentage of 19.2% of its population being diabetes patients in 2011.”
The lecturer gave a presentation on the result of five major experiments on the importance of exercise and its effect on health. The experiments were: a Finnish study; a diabetes prevention program; Daa Qing Study, stop-niddm trial and the role of Xenical Drug in preventing diabetes in obese individuals; and the XENDOS study.
The lecturer answered questions and inquiries from the audience; then Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi honored Dr. Barakat for her efforts, and presented her with a certificate of thanks and appreciation along with a commemorative gift. He also valued her fruitful cooperation and contributions in spreading health and sports culture among the Abu Dhabi Police Staff.
