Abu Dhabi Police began with the procedures to create a car paint database, to carry out analysis of the chemical composition of car paint in traffic accidents and in cases in general.

Major Expert Mohammed Saeed Al Jaberi, Director of the Chemical Division at the Forensic Evidence Department, and Director of the Car Paint Database Project, said that the project falls within the strategy of best usage of forensic evidence. It was proposed as an initiative in coordination with the Directorate General of Strategy and Performance Development, which backed it up as it achieves the outlooks of police work.

He added that if this project, expected to be launched later this year, is completed, the Abu Dhabi Police Forensic Department will be the only entity in the Middle East to use this method to compare car paints.

He pointed out that through this project, a car and its manufacturing year can be identified, and caught if it fled from the scene of an accident. The database may also be used to solve cases where cars or car paints are involved.

Moreover, the department contacted forensic laboratories in Canada, and organized specialized workshops attended and mentored by international forensic experts in chemical analysis and in creating databases. They explained how to use them in cases of hit-and-run accidents, in carrying out comparisons and coming to results after analyzing the chemical composition of paint, and determining the model and year of manufacturing of the car.

Al Jaberi added that the department is coordinating with many international forensic laboratories in the US, Europe, Japan, Singapore and Australia to apply best standards and global specifications.

He also brought to attention that the Forensic Evidence Department is currently working on cooperating with car agencies in the UAE to gather necessary information to create the database, as well as share it with some member states in the database network, in order to exchange car-paint data, noting that this cooperation offers more information about car paints and their chemical composition.

At the end, he reaffirmed that the Forensic Evidence Department is about to choose the computer software of the project, prior to putting it in action, and then activate the link between paint database at the department and the database in the forensic laboratory in Canada, so that the Abu Dhabi Police would become an active member in the global car paint database.
