Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, U.N. special rapporteur on human trafficking, especially women and children commended the experience, the procedures applied and commitment of Ministry of Interior in the field anti human-trafficking in this field.
She said: “The UAE is an example to be followed in the field of anti-trafficking in persons, among other countries of the world. I hope these procedures will continue to be applied and developed as well as the efforts to stop human trafficking.”
Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior for Resources and Support Services met the UN Official in the Ministry’s Headquarters where they discussed a number of subjects including methods to enhance cooperation and coordination with the Human Rights Council to fight human trafficking.
The meeting was attended by Brigadier Ahmed Mohamed Nakhira, Director of Human Rights Department in Ministry of Interior, Head of the Anti-Trafficking Committee; Brigadier General Dr. Abdulla Ali bin Sahoo, Director General of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Sharjah; Colonel Khamis Obeid Al Kaabi, Deputy Director of Human Trafficking Combating Committee; members of the committee; and a number of officers from the Ministry of Interior.
Brigadier Ahmed Nakhira met the UN official in Al Ittihad Hall in the Ministry’s Headquarters to discuss the UAE’s efforts in this field and to identify the roles of ministries and other related institutions.
He said, “The UAE is making significant efforts to fight trafficking of persons, and these efforts were praised and appreciated by the international community and Human Rights Associations.”
He added: “The Ministry of Interior with its different departments carried out many initiatives on a local, regional, and global level to fight trafficking in persons and support victims.”
He asserted that the Ministry of Interior seeks to enhance cooperation with international associations, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and international committees to help eliminate human trafficking crimes and support victims.
The meeting covered a presentation of the huge efforts made by the Ministry of Interior to fight these crimes and underscore the role of the UAE in the field of human rights, and the role of UAE institutions in these matters to execute agreements and recommendations that were discussed in the comprehensive periodical report of human rights in 2008. The presentation also covered the preparation for the UAE to apply international standards in the field of fighting trafficking of persons.
The UN official listened to an explanatory presentation regarding the efforts of Ministry of Interior in the field of countering trafficking in persons on the country level.
Joy Ngozi Ezeilo said that the meeting was fruitful and it reflected the cooperation between the UAE and international organizations concerned with trafficking in persons. She assured the importance of international cooperation on this matter.
