Traffic accidents deaths fall by 21% in Abu Dhabi

Colonel (Engineer) Hussain Ahmed Al Harthi, Director of Traffic and Patrols at ADP has announced a declination in deaths and severe injuries resulting from traffic accidents in Abu Dhabi in the first quarter of this year (2010), in comparison with last year.

He said, the reduction in deaths reached 21%, a total of 93 deaths this year compared to the same period in 2009 where 118 people died in traffic accidents. Severe injuries declined by 7%, from 132 persons in 2009 to 123 persons this year.

The main causes of accidents according to Colonel Al Harthi were:

Sudden veering off the road = 19 deaths and 28 severe injuries.

Speeding = 11 deaths and 9 persons severely injured.

Negligence and lack of attention = 10 deaths and 10 critical injuries.

Lane adherence violation = 7 deaths and 3 persons sustained severe injuries.

Tires bursting = 7 deaths and 2 persons sustained severe injuries.

Colonel al Harthi said "The decline in accident numbers is good. But we look for better results during the coming period. Traffic Control Strategy focuses on all causes of accidents, including sudden veering off the road, non-compliance of motorists with traffic rules and regulations, speeding, not giving priority to others, not leaving safety distance between vehicles, reckless driving, not allowing pedestrians to cross roads safely at designated spots, jumping the red light and entering the road without ensuring road clearance".

He attributed the decline in traffic accidents to strict traffic control on internal and external roads, activation of civilian-type patrol cars, introduction of the new radar Al Qanass the (Sniper) and all available technologies to raise traffic safety level.

He urged motorists, especially on highways at night, to pay more attention, abide by traffic rules and regulations, and have some rest when they feel tired, leave safe distance between vehicles, and adhere to speed limits to ensure the safety of road users.
