New speed limits next year

ADP has revealed that new speed limits will introduced in Abu Dhabi Emirate with effect from the beginning of next year 2011, after completion of the study of re-evaluation of speed limits results on the roads of the Emirate, in collaboration with major partners (Department of Transport, and Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region Municipalities).

Colonel (Engineer) Hussain Ahmed Al Harthi, Director of ADP Directorate of Traffic and Patrols urges drivers to abide by the new speed limits shown on sign board on main roads and residential areas, which will be announced during the few coming days, and before the end of the current year. Driver should also abide by speed limits at detours and construction works sites on internal and external roads.

The new speed limits at residential areas vary between 20 and 40 Km/hr. Speed limits programmed on radars on the following roads: Abu Dhabi – Al Ain Road (From Bani Yass Park Bridge to Al Sad Area), Abu Dhabi – Dubai Road (From Al Mufraq Bridge to Seeh Shuaib and From Al Shahama to Seeh Shuaib), and Suwaihan Road (From Al Shawamikh Bridge to Al Hair), have not been changed.

"The new specified speed limits are based on scientific and technical studies of standard deviation of speed limits, volume of traffic, use lands surrounding internal and external roads, and in comparison with international practices of countries such as: UK, Australia, New Zealand, many of US States and Sweden.", added Al Harthi.

He has lauded the positive cooperation of major partners with ADP Directorate of Traffic and patrols through their participation in technical and scientific studies of speed limits on the road of Abu Dhabi Emirate. Also for their cooperation in execution of engineering projects regarding transitory distances and sign boards showing speeds on different roads.

Al Harthi has affirmed that Abu Dhabi Traffic, within the framework of traffic safety, implements many initiatives with a view to improve traffic safety level in the Emirate, through identifying four key strategic objectives: Implementation of traffic safety rules and regulations, working with major partners to develop traffic safety system, increasing traffic safety culture among all road users and reaching best rates of response to traffic accidents.

"All these efforts aim to develop an integrated traffic safety system on internal and external roads of Abu Dhabi Emirate, in order to achieve the main goals for which the roads network has been constructed: To provide safe, comfortable and cheap transport for all community segments, to have the transport system become one of the main supporters of the comprehensive economic and urban development and to achieve Abu Dhabi Government vision to become one of the best five governments at the world level", added Al Harthi..
