The awareness campaign will also include Al Ain City and the Western Region, through various educational lectures and activities, which will be held in Bawadi Mall.
More awareness lectures will be held at Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, the Ministry of Interior, and the Al Ain Police GHQ, to educate the police and ministry’s staff on colorectal cancer and prevention means.
The Medial Services Department underscored the importance of early detection of colorectal cancers. The department explained that males and females ranging in age from 40-75 years must undergo a colonoscopy once every 10 years in addition to carrying out a blood-in-stool test once every two years.
Colonel Jassem Al Tunaiji, Director of the Medical Services Department at Abu Dhabi Police said that the medical team displayed a large replica of the colon at Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi. The replica was used to introduce visitors of the mall to the causes of the disease, its various stages and means of prevention in a simple and understandable manner, to enhance public knowledge on colon cancer. Moreover, Colonel Al Tunaiji pointed out that the Medical Services Department aims to enhance health education across the country, to promote the efforts of concerned parties in this regard. He added that this will enhance the Abu Dhabi Police’s partnership with community members, and increase their awareness in various areas, including the health issue.
On the same note, the Marina Mall’s visitors headed to where the large replica of the colon was displayed by the Medical Services Department to learn more about the disease. They listened to the medical team who presented valuable advice to them about ways to protect against it.
Dr. Sameh Muhammad Fakhri, Gastroenterology Consultant at the Medical Services Department of Abu Dhabi Police and member of the Higher Committee for Colon Cancer Control, stressed the importance of following the best preventive practices. He added that the campaign aims to enable public members to avoid the causes of colorectal cancer by introducing them to the disease and its risks.
He said that early detection means monitoring any changes or tumors that may develop into cancer in healthy people who show no signs of illness. He added that early detection of colorectal cancer means looking for tumors that may lead to cancerous changes, and these tumors should be removed before they transform into cancer.
Furthermore, he advised people to consult their doctor to choose the best method. “We generally recommend a colonoscopy, since it is a diagnostic and preventative treatment at the same time. Undergoing a colonoscopy will allow doctors to remove any polyps that may evolve into cancer within 10 years if they are not removed”, expl
