Department launches its traffic safety Strategy for 2010
27 campaigns in the offing
The Department of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police has launched its strategy for traffic control during this year, 2010.It consists of 27 traffic campaigns involving the Sections and Branches of the Department, and Comprehensive Police Stations. The campaign will be implemented in four different phases. Each phase will be implemented over three month's period and will continue throughout the year.
According to Lt. Colonel Mohammad Dhahi, Head of Traffic Control Section, Traffic and patrols Department at ADP, an integrated plan has been made on the basis of studies and analyses of traffic accident indicators over the past three years (2007, 2008 and 2009). The campaign will focus on hotspots, which had registered repeated violations by motorists. The accidents have been classified according to their seriousness. The strategy will also intensify traffic patrols on these spots on inner-city roads and highways.
He added, the strategy in Abu Dhabi City will be based on two key themes. The first is to step up traffic control with the participation of 15 undercover patrol vehicles, traffic patrol police and traffic observers who will be deployed on internal and external roads round the clock, to monitor and book offenders. The second theme will concentrate on awareness drives to increase traffic safety levels.
Lt. Colonel Dhahi has urged all community members, drivers and road users to cooperate with traffic police. They are to comply with traffic rules and regulations for their own safety. During the first quarter of the current year, the strategy will focus on non-compliance with traffic signs and directions, sudden turns, over speeding, non-adherence to specified lanes, not giving priority to pedestrians at designated spots, not leaving adequate distance between vehicles and jumping red light.
The second quarter will focus on sudden turn, non-compliance with traffic signs and directions, jumping red light, crossing roads at undesignated spots by pedestrians and not leaving adequate distance between vehicles.
During the second half of the year the strategy will focus on issues like expired tires, sudden turns, non-compliance with traffic signs, not giving priority to pedestrians at designated spots, jumping red light, entering the road without ensuring its clearness, over speeding and not keeping adequate distance between vehicles.
He urges motorists to cooperate with the Department of Traffic and patrols at ADP in order to enhance traffic safety efforts, for all road users. Motorists should adhere to speed limits and all traffic rules and regulations. All community segments, companies, small businesses, parents are requested to feed the culture of crossing roads at designated spots by pedestrians.
