Abu Dhabi Police Medical Services succeeded in curing a patient suffering from a rare type of the Hemorrhagic Lichen skin disease. This patient’s case is classified as the fourth case worldwide, and tests performed on the samples collected from the patient further proved its rarity.

The Medical Services presented the case at The Abu Dhabi Dermatology & Aesthetic Medicine Conference 2013, which recently concluded in Abu Dhabi. The conference was organized by the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters (GHQ). The conference addressed a wide range of issues including the use of stem cells in therapies and the latest technologies in diagnosis and therapy fields.

Dermatologists in the Abu Dhabi Police Medical Services, Dr. Shehada Salama and Dr. Nawar Al Falasi, said that this rare Hemorrhagic Lichen disease is one of the diseases that has unknown causes, but it usually hits people with chronic diseases or those who suffer from a weak immune system. The doctors stressed that the disease discovered by Medical Services was cured after a three-month therapy; they explained that the disease often starts with red brownish or yellow rashes on the legs and feet, accompanied with itchy sensations that force the patient to itch the skin causing infected areas to bleed. The rashes also spread to the abdomen and arms, and can cover the entire body.

Dr. Nawar said that curing the disease depends on the doctor who is treating the case. There are several options that the doctor can use to cure this rare type of the Hemorrhagic Lichen disease. She stressed that the patient has to adhere to the instructions given by the doctor to help cure the disease. She also  advised individuals to visit their physicians whenever they notice any changes in their bodies and to take required medical tests.

In relation to using stem cells in curing diseases, dermatologists at Abu Dhabi Police Medical Services, Dr. Shehadah noted that stem cells are also used in curing hair loss, resisting caducity, whitening skin, and curing some skin spots. He explained that these cells are treated by adding certain substances that make them grow and become suitable to be used in the region that needs curing. The material, which is similar to a liquid, is then applied to the area that needs medical attention.

Dr. Nawar Falasi said that the patient would require several sessions in his therapy based on the condition of his illness and the response his body is showing to treatments. She added that the patient must have proper balanced nutrition, and must not be suffering from other diseases. The patient is examined prior to the treatment to ensure that he is not suffering from hair loss diseases such as: anemia, hormonal disorders, and scalp diseases. She advised patients to be committed to treatments, take care of their hair, follow the medical instructions on how to take care of the scalp, and avoid tension and stress.

Dr. Shehadah said that stem cell treatments indicated good results in treating skin pigmentation caused by exposure to the sun, hormonal disorders, or pregnancy, as well as treating scars resulting from acne, surgeries, or injuries.

He concluded that The Abu Dhabi Dermatology & Aesthetic Medicine Conference 2013 promoted medical services and treatment in the UAE, noting the role of Abu Dhabi Police Medical Services in this regard. He added that the conference provided a training opportunity for doctors by organizing workshops during the conference to elevate their efficiency and improve it in order to achieve excellence in the dermatology and aesthetic fields.
