The Medical Services Department at Abu Dhabi Police announced that its new laser eye surgery unit "LASIK" has began providing medical services and therapy for the Ministry of Interior’ staff members. The Department also indicated that a number of individuals have undergone medical examinations in preparation for conducting a vision correction surgery.

Major General Khalil Dawood Badran, Director General of Finance and Services stated that providing the "LASIK" service represents an achievement towards enhancing the quality of the services provided by the Medical Services Department. This comes in line with the vision of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior to offer the best medical services and treatment for the Ministry’s staff members and their families.

He attributed the development of such services to the support provided by the police leadership by introducing state-of-the-art technologies used in therapy and hiring medical skills; as well as to the employees’ efforts which have contributed to maintain the leadership of the Medical Services Department in both the medical and therapeutic fields.

"The Ministry of Interior dedicates great attention to provide the best services as per the international quality criteria and standards in treating patients. This contributes to the success of the services development and integration system at the Medical Services Department, to treat patients, provide medicines, and expand health education among police staff members and community members", added Major General Badran.

On the same note, Colonel Jassem Al Tunaiji, Head of the Medical Services Department, noted that the "LASIK" Unit is equipped with modern devices, to improve the quality of medical services provided by the Department. This embodies the Police Leadership’s vision aimed at developing medical and therapeutic services for police staff members and their families. The unit also offers advice and spreads medical culture on various topics between community members, in line with the State strategy on health care.

Colonel Al Tunaiji also tackled the leading role of the Medical Services Department in providing treatment to patients; introducing the most advanced tools and instruments to diagnose of cases; and prescribing the proper treatment. He also pointed out the Department’s keenness to provide the best services that enhance the quality of patients’ treatment.

For their part, Ophthalmology consultants Dr. Flex and Dr. Bilas Mombin emphasized the absence of any post-surgery complications involving the "LASIK" vision correction surgery. They also reassured patients wishing to undergo such operation and explained accurately the various stages that patients must go through before going into surgery.

Dr. Flex, Ophthalmology Consultant, explained that all surgeries that will be carried out in the "LASIK" Unit at the Medical Services Department in Abu Dhabi Police, ADP will use the newly developed high quality Excimer laser device, for people who are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism and want to get rid of the eyeglasses or contact lens. "The Excimer Laser devices uses shortwave ultraviolet rays to modify the cornea’s refractive power", added Dr. Flex.

He added that during the LASIK surgery, the laser is used to cut a thin flap of corneal tissue, using a computer, consistent with the refractive defects determined through careful examination prior to surgery.
