2681 motorbike violations in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi last year
 
 
Over 2,500 motorbike riders were booked by traffic policemen for violating traffic rules in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi last year, ADP Traffic and Patrols Directorate statistics revealed.

Of the 2,681 offences, 1,186 were reported for exceeding maximum speed limit, 146 for not wearing helmet, 114 for lane discipline violation, 72 for not holding ownership while driving, 34 for driving in the opposite direction, 25 for driving noisy motorbikes and 13 for jumping the red signal.

Colonel Ghaith Al Za’abi, director general of Traffic Coordination, Ministry of Interior, said, “As the number of violations amounted to 25 per cent of the number of motorbikes, there is a need for traffic awareness campaigns on risks of unsafe riding of motorbikes.”
He said, “The Ministry studies the recommendations of the Symposium organized by Abu Dhabi Police last year on the risks of four wheel motorbikes. Regulatory laws to use such motorbikes will be issued, including the introduction of special driving licenses, defining the required technical specifications, and the places allowed driving these motorbikes.
The regulatory laws will address the risks caused by misuse, and focuses on teaching people how to drive motorbikes properly. The laws aim at propagating the concept of safe driving, and appealing the families to monitor their sons.
He urged bikers to join driving courses to learn how to deal with risks, to wear helmets and other protection equipments.
Children should not be allowed to drive adults’ bikes, he said, advising adults not to accompany children with them and choosing the suitable type of bikes.
For his part, Brig Eng. Hussein Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols, Abu Dhabi Police, warned against the risks which minors could face while driving motorbikes on the public road and deserts. This will result in deaths and serious injuries, he added.

He appealed the members of the public to support the efforts of ADP awareness campaign against the risks of motorbikes. Traffic control and booking offenders could prevent misuse of motorbikes, and hence protect teenagers from fatal accidents.

Awareness, he added, represents the second theme for reducing risks of motorbikes. He said this includes organizing of lectures, distribution of brochures, preparation of different programs via media channel on the accidents of motorbikes and the preventive measures that should be taken.

Within the same respect, His Eminence Sheikh Ahmed Al Kubaisi, and Islamic preacher, said that the risks of motorbikes could be avoided through developing the social and family awareness, and distributing responsibilities among the various categories of the society to support the Campaign materially and morally, investing the religion and thought.

He believed that it is ethical to obligate individuals to comply with safe driving. “This is an honorable act of worship and a sublime moral commitment”, he emphasized. It is everyone’s duty, locals and expats, to be an active member in this blessed Campaign, he said, indicating that a public traffic opinion must be formed so that offenders and reckless riders realize that the whole society condemns their abhorred acts.
