The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police announced the installation of 15 new radars, which will be activated tomorrow. This will include seven radars, which will be installed on the road leading to Sheikh Zayed Tunnel and on its entrances and exits. A total of seven other radars have been installed along the Arabian Gulf Road and Baynounah Tunnel’s entrances and exits. There is also radar installed in the Al Raha Beach region.

Captain Ahmed Al Muhairi, Head of the Traffic Safety Division in the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, explained that the installation of the new radars embodies Abu Dhabi Police’s traffic safety strategy. The strategy reinforces traffic control and road safety, within the efforts exerted to reduce traffic accidents and the resulting deaths and injuries.

Al Muhairi called on motorists to observe traffic laws and speed limits set on internal and external roads to ensure their safety. Moreover, he stressed that the Directorate General is working to intensify control by increasing the number of fixed and mobile radars on all roads in Abu Dhabi, as well as in residential areas.

Furthermore, Al Muhairi highlighted that increasing the number of radars on Sheikh Zayed Road and the tunnel is due to the road’s high level of usage as it is one of the highways. Sheikh Zayed Road and tunnel constitutes one of the main transportation arteries leading to the port and the Corniche area. This transformed the road into an open street and fast lane within the city.

Al Muhairi said that the speed limit on Sheikh Zayed Road from Al Saada Bridge to the main tunnel is only 80 kilometers per hour without an extra margin. This speed limit is reduced to 60 kilometers per hour after the end of the tunnel.

Moreover, Al Muhairi explained that changing the speed limit in this region is based on field studies conducted with the aim to achieve the highest levels of traffic safety for road users. The speed has been gradually reduced as vehicles approach the inner roads of the city. The number of lanes inside the tunnel is also decreased to four lanes.

Al Muhairi announced that trucks weighing two tons and above, and those loaded with petroleum, its derivatives, or any inflammable materials are prohibited from passing through Sheikh Zayed Tunnel in either direction. He also called on all institutions loading such materials to urge its drivers not to pass through Sheikh Zayed Tunnel.

He appealed to drivers to observe instructions on signboards and road signs on Sheikh Zayed Road and the tunnel that indicate speed limits, exits and entrances outbound to the eastern ring road, the port, or to the Corniche. Moreover, he urged them to pay attention and leave a safe distance between vehicles to maintain safety and reduce traffic accidents.

Finally, he noted that the Traffic and Patrols Directorate does not seek any material gain from installing these radars, but it aims to ensure the safety of people and the preservation of public property, especially as traffic violation records reveal that behind every accident there is often a violation.
