Traffic accidents drop in Abu Dhabi

 

Traffic accidents in Abu Dhabi have seen a remarkable decline in 2004 thanks to the strict measures adopted by Abu Dhabi Police according to a senior Police Official.

 

With record 20-percentage drop in 2004 over 2003, the number of fatalities and injuries fell in 2004 by 15 and 12 per cent respectively in comparison to the previous year, in the Abu Dhabi city. Fatalities went down by 24 per cent or 44 cases and traffic accidents by 22 per cent or 445 accidents, said Col.Gaith Al Zaabi, Director of the traffic and licensing department at Abu Dhabi Police.

 

The decline in the number of traffic accidents is a clear in the number of traffic accidents is a clear indicator to the efficiency of measures taken by the Abu Dhabi Police to prevent accidents, he added.

 

He termed that the traffic accidents taking place at traffic signals as the most fatal due to the bumper-to-bumper crash.

 

Fatalities caused by motorists jumping traffic signals plummeted by 60 per cent from 10 cases in 2003

 

The emirate wise there were 240 accidents of jumping the traffic signals in 2004 against 285 in 2003,down by 16 per cent, he noted

 

The number of moderate and serious injuries rose by 86 and 15 per cent to 13 and 98 cases in 2004 from seven and 85 cases in 2003 respectively. Light injuries dropped by 29 per cent to 298 cases from 418 in 2003
