Saif bin Zayed orders quick completion of “remote trails” project
According to the instructions given yesterday by Lieutenant General H.H Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the "remote trials" project will soon be completed.
It is a new project envisaging a virtual link between courtrooms and prisons throughout the UAE. The project, the outcome of cooperation between the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Justice, will reduce unnecessary shuttling between prisons and courts for inmates throughout the country, according to Major General Ahmad Nasser Al Raisi, director-general of Abu Dhabi Police Central Operations
"Detainees in the punitive and correctional facilities will be able to address the jury using close-circuit video conferencing technology whenever they are required to appear before the court," Al Raisi said.
The project is part of the e-link programme between the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Justice which covers all punitive and correctional facilities in the country.
Major General Al Raisi said the project is the first of its kind in the region follows instructions given by Sheikh Saif to mitigate detainees' troubles and enhance joint cooperation between relevant bodies to ensure their well-being.
"Usually, prisoners and suspects in police custody are required to show up in courts even if they were detained in different emirates. The facility is quite helpful especially when there is more than one case against a prisoner," he said.
The project is especially meant to reduce the burden on elderly detainees or those with special needs
