The Decision-Making Support Center in Abu Dhabi Police, in cooperation with the National Center of Meteorology and Seismology, organized a lecture titled “Earthquakes in the UAE... causes, effects and how to mitigate their risks”. The lecture was delivered by Abdulkader Fendi, earthquakes’ expert at the Center.

The lecture, which was held in the Police Officers’ Club in Abu Dhabi, was attended by Colonel Jassim Mohammed Al Tunaiji, Director of the Medical Services Department; Lt. Colonel Mohammed Abdul Jalil Al Ansari, Head of the UAE Search and Rescue Division; Lt. Colonel Dr. Jamileh Nasser Abdullah, Director of the Women Police branch at the Government and Diplomatic Facilities Protection Department; along with a number of officers and interested parties.

The lecturer emphasized that the earthquake monitoring devices cover all regions throughout the country; noting that they are used to monitor earthquakes in the UAE and the neighboring regions; as well as powerful earthquakes around the world.

He stated: "Predicting earthquakes is unthinkable, but it is wise nowadays to evaluate seismic risk, and means to deal with them in order to mitigate their impact.” Moreover, he referred to the project carried out by the Abu Dhabi Municipality, in cooperation with the National Center of Meteorology and Seismology to assess seismic risks; as well as the special construction codes, particular to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, as a substitute for other international codes.

Fendi also tackled earthquakes risks and effects, touching on seismology; earthquake types; monitoring and prediction parameters and mechanisms; as well as public safety methods and procedures.

Furthermore, the expert focused on the techniques used to reduce earthquake damage, and the proper behavior to adopt when they occur. He shed light on areas where earthquakes frequently occur; how to face them; and the necessary individual and international precautions before, during and after earthquakes.

He reviewed the types of natural disasters in different parts of the world; stages of geological development; risks to human life; and their economical and social impacts. He presented examples and illustrative pictures on hemispheric structure; tectonic plates’ theory; and post-seismic damages.

Concluding, the lecturer answered answer queries of the attendees.
