The United Arab Emirates celebrates the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2012 on Tuesday under the theme “Accompany who Accompanies You… and No To drugs.” The celebration will take place at Al Diar Regency Hotel, in Fujairah.
Major General Khamis Saif bin Swaif, Director General of Criminal Security at the Ministry of Interior and Head of the High Commission for Drugs Control, said: “The UAE shares this celebration every year with the entire world on this international day, on June 26th.” Pointing out that the High Commission held its most recent meetings last week to review the celebration preparations and carry out the final arrangements of the anti-drugs units and forces in the country.
He explained that this year’s celebrations is organized in Fujairah and coincides with the launch of the day in all Emirates. The activities will include a photos and paintings exhibition, along with an educational documentary highlighting the efforts made by the Ministry of Interior to fight this harmful epidemic. Educational brochures, posters, and leaflets along with gifts will be distributed to students at the attending schools. The celebrations will also feature a number of activities that aim to increase awareness among different society segments on the dangers of drugs and narcotics. The public will also be educated on the joint efforts made by the Ministry of Interior, the police and security forces along with other relevant government institutions on how to support these efforts with all available means to prevent the society from this harmful epidemic.
Colonel Abdul Rahman Al Owais Acting Director General of the Federal Anti-Narcotics General Directorate at the Ministry of Interior conveyed that on the side lines of the celebrations, the distinguished anti-drugs unit members on the state level will be honored. Recognition will include a number of social associations and individuals who took part in the different activities to fight drug abuse. Colonel Al Owais highlighted drug fighting efforts as a social responsibility that requires the cooperation of the entire community including families, schools, clergymen, public interest associations, the media, etc. in order to immunize its members against drugs and correlating tragedies.
