Two Asian cleaners died today after noon (Tuesday) after falling from the 15th floor while cleaning the window from the outside. The building is located at Khalifa Road in Abu Dhabi.
Major Ismail Mohammed Saeed Al Shamsi, from the Operations Department in the Civil Defense General Headquarters in Abu Dhabi said that the initial information show that the workers were cleaning the window of a building when the scaffold they were on broke at 3:21 p.m.
He added: “Upon receiving the information from the operations room, Civil Defense teams and Ambulances of the Emergency and Public Safety Department of the Abu Dhabi Police, along with Security Media Patrols headed to the place.”
He said that the two workers were trapped inside the crushed scaffold, and the civil defense teams pulled them out the scaffold however they were in their last breathes. He noted that Investigations were initiated to identify the details of the accident.
Captain Abdullah Hamad al Tamimi, Head of Customer Service and Public Relations Division and the Civil Defense General Headquarters in Abu Dhabi, called upon maintenance companies working in the field of constructions and building cleaning to always keep their equipment and cranes at good conditions, adding that scaffolds wires should be in excellent conditions at all times, and ensure that they are not affected or damaged due to weather conditions or sun heat, and this aims to ensure the safety of workers and others as well.
He noted that the Civil Defense General Headquarters implemented this year the national safety campaign at the industrial zones focusing on awareness on the safety of labors’ residencies, factories, warehouses, and all that is related to safety including maintaining the cranes and scaffolds used by cleaners.
