The Al Ain Medical Services section of Abu Dhabi Police recently organized a medical lecture at the Al Ain Punitive and Reformatory Establishment. The lecture aims to acquaint the establishment’s staff and inmates with the dangers and risks of high blood pressure or hypertension.
In his lecture, Dr. Ashraf Ismail, Doctor at the Medical Services clinic at the Reformatory, tackled the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure: causes and means of prevention”, stressing the importance of raising the level of health awareness among employees.
He pointed out that according to statistics published by the World Health Organization on World Health Day, one out of three adults have high blood pressure, noting that An estimated 17.3 million people died from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in 2008.
“The WHO dedicated a significant importance to this vital theme. For this end, it set an ultimate goal to reduce the incidence of heart attacks and strokes, to encourage adults to check their blood pressure and to follow the advice of health-care professionals,” he said.
Dr Ismail added that high blood pressure is preventable and treatable, by practicing regular physical activity; eating a balanced diet; reducing salt intake; avoiding harmful use of alcohol; and avoiding tobacco use.
In the same context, Dr Angham Ali Aman, training and health education officer, gave a similar lecture to female employees and inmates, urging them to follow a healthy diet and practice sports activities to maintain a healthy life.
