The Medical Services Department at Abu Dhabi Police launched on Monday a week-long health awareness campaign about asthma and quitting smoking, in all Abu Dhabi police general directorates.

Brigadier Salem Saleh Al Junaibi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Police Medical Services Department, stated that ADP police has been proactive in the fight against smoking through awareness campaigns in all departments, lectures and brochures, in addition to establishing a specialized medical clinic to help smokers quit this bad habit once and for all. The latter is regarded as one of the foremost and most important clinics in Abu Dhabi, and has already welcomed 150 smokers from Abu Dhabi Police personnel since its inception, and helped more than one third of them to quit smoking permanently.

He added that the Medical Services Department had partaken a few days ago in the International No Smoking Day, by raising awareness on asthma and quitting smoking through various events and educational activities to reduce tobacco use among Abu Dhabi Police personnel and community members in general.

For his part, Dr. Ahmed Fathi, internal medicine specialist and manager of the no smoking clinic at the Medical Services Department, shed the light on the multiple and dangerous diseases caused by smoking, such as gum infection, muscle problems, angina, neck and back pains, irregular eye fluttering, eye parasites, osteoporosis and weak immunity. Tobacco also causes chronic and fatal diseases, such as colon, liver, prostate and lung cancer, heart diseases and strokes.
