The General Directorate of Civil Defense in Abu Dhabi recently celebrated the graduation of 31 of its staff members after completing two specialized courses in civil defense. The courses, which included the 11th Firefighting Basics Course, and the second Confined Space Rescue course, were organized by the Civil Defense Academy in al Faya, Abu Dhabi.

The graduation ceremony was attended by Colonel Abdullah Rashid Al Zaabi, Head of Strategy and Performance Department at the General Directorate of Civil Defense and a number of officers.

The courses aimed at qualifying Civil Defense members, enhancing their skills, competencies and performance, and acquainting them with the various types of accidents. The courses are also designed to allow Civil Defense members to stay abreast of the latest developments, and international field applications in firefighting.

Participants in the two-month firefighting course conducted hands-on training on ways to extinguish fires and prevent them. They were introduced to the various types of vehicles and equipment, and ways to operate them. They were also trained on the skills of using respirators, as well as the appropriate safety and prevention methods.

As part of the one-week Confined Space Rescue course, participants carried out practical training and attended theoretical lectures on means to identify confined spaces, their various types, potential hazards, and the proper evacuation procedures. At the end of the ceremony, Colonel Al Zaabi handed out the certificates to the graduates.
