The Al Ain Social Support Center, affiliated to the Social Support Centers Department at Abu Dhabi Police, organized an awareness-raising lecture under the theme “Recognizing Violence against Children” on the Al Ain Municipality theatre. The lecture is part of the department’s plan to raise awareness amongst community members about the various social problems, to acquaint them with the means to solve and handle these issues, and to highlight the role played by the social support centers in solving these problems.

The lecture was delivered Suhaila Al Kandari, Social Worker at the Social Support Center in Abu Dhabi. Al Kandari stressed that the UAE is at the forefront of countries endeavoring to ensure the security, safety and protection of all children residing in the country. Moreover, she highlighted the laws enacted by the UAE, which provide children with their essential rights, which include the right to education, health, family, culture and recreation. “These laws include provisions that protect children against abuse, ill-treatment, violence and exploitation of all kinds,” she said.

Additionally, Ms. Al Kandari emphasized that the UAE law has included penalties to deter anyone who attempts to abuse children or expose them to abuse, especially direct caregivers, such as parents, teachers, and doctors. “The UAE law enjoined community members and segments to be the guarantors of children’s rights, and urged them to report any suspected abuse incurred by children,” she noted.

On the same note, Ms. Al Kandari highlighted the types of child abuse, including neglect, by failing to adequately provide for a child's needs, physical assault, which is deliberately inflicting bodily injury to the child, willful and intended neglect and failure to prevent injury or physical harm to the child.

Al Kandari emphasized that all community members are required to report cases of abuse against children and that adults are responsible for maintaining the safety of children. Furthermore, she explained the means to identify suspected cases of child abuse or ill-treatment, and encouraged the audience not to hesitate to communicate with the Social Support Centers Department to report such cases. “The reported cases will be treated with confidentiality and professionalism, in addition to providing individual counseling and professional treatment,” she pointed out.

Towards the end of the lecture, Al Kandari acquainted the audience with the existing channels of communication with the department. She said: “Community members can call the toll-free phone 8005354 or the Social Support Centers in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region; or visit the centers in person. They can also contact the operations room on 999, or Aman service on the toll-free number 8002626.”

The lecture was attended by staff members from various entities such as the Al Ain Municipality, the Al Ain Special Needs Rehabilitation Center, Al Jahli Institute of Science and Technology, the Police Officers Club, the United Arab Emirates University, the Al Ain Care Center, the Amnah Quran Memorization Center, and others.
