The Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate carried out a successful mock drill to extinguish a fire and evacuate staff at the Emirates Steel Wool Manufacturing Establishment in the Musaffah Industrial Area. The drill is designed to assess the readiness and efficiency of the Civil Defense staff members, in addition to the safety standards at the factory.
Lt. Colonel Mohammed Abdul Jalil Al Ansari, Director General of Civil Defense in Abu Dhabi, said: “The drill falls in line with the efforts of the Civil Defense General Directorate to ensure the efficiency of internal contingency plans, in dealing with the various disaster patterns included in the “Federal Emergency Plan to Face Disasters”, which require fast intervention. It also aims to enhance response time during fire fighting operations, to preserve lives and property.”
Saeed Ghumran Al Romaithi, CEO of Emirates Steel, said: “This drill is part of the company’s strategy, which stipulates the need to constantly review the safe and reliable functioning condition of the security and public safety tools and equipment, and to examine the technical details pertaining to the rescue operations during fire accidents. This strategy would allow us to adopt the best means and methods to handle such risks and help to enhance the readiness of the concerned entities at the factory in dealing with emergencies and crises to guarantee everyone’s safety.”
Firefighting units from civil defense fire stations in Al Mussafah M14 and Al Mussafah M33, the field hospital, the Ambulance Section took part in the drill, along with patrols from the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police; and officers from the Red Crescent and the National Emergency Response Program “SANID”.
As per the scenario, the Abu Dhabi Police’s Operations Room received a tip-off on the outbreak of the “fire” at 9:00 am. As soon as the fire alarm sounded, emergency teams immediately evacuated the building, pending the arrival of the competent police entities, the Civil Defense and backup entities that handled the incident efficiently and in record time. According to the training scenario, paramedics treated 10 individuals for smoke inhalation; and provided first aid to three people who ‘fainted’ at the incident site.
