UN Global traffic safety week begins
 
Many programs to follow for creating road safety awareness
 
United Nations Global traffic safety week began in Abu Dhabi yesterday with a Mass rally which began from the Hilton hotel to the Marina Mall. Many Senior Officers from the General headquarters of Abu Dhabi Police and the Ministry of Interior, other organizational heads co organizing the event and a large number of, public taking part in it.
 
This is the first time such an event is being organized through out the world under the UN umbrella. The theme of the global campaign is with the campaign theme is “road safety is no accident. The key objective of the week long campaign is to promote road safety and create better safety awareness. The campaign theme is “road safety is no accident.”
 
Among others participating in the week long campaign includes the Abu Dhabi Health authority, Higher college of technology, Emirates transport company ,Abu Dhabi Municipality, Emirates traffic safety society and Emirates driving school.
 
.The global road safety campaign is to focus on youth getting their involvement in the campaign as well as creating awareness among them the need to follow the traffic safety regulations.
 
UN report has revealed about the immense loss that road accidents bring to the world over. The record shows about 1.2 million people die from road accidents, cause injury and disable 20-50 million people, 40% of road deaths occur among 0-25 age group
And male account for 75%of all road accidents among those under 25 years .The study also shows that traffic accidents globally cost 518 billion $ annually .The road accidents are predictable and preventable says the UN paper ,using seat belts can reduce fatal accidents by 40-60%
 
Major Jamal Al Amri, director of Public relations and Mass media administration at the traffic and patrols department said that many lectures, seminars; contests will be held during the traffic safety week. Litterateurs will be distributed to reach all the segments of the society, special visits to hospitals to meet the victims will also be a part of the program he added.
 
Colonel Al Za’abi the chairman of the organizing committee called upon the people to wholesomely participate in the event and jointly take the message of road safety across the country and make our roads accident free and safer.
