Police to step up radar monitoring

The Traffic and Patrols department of the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters is weighing the option of setting up more radar on roads within and outside city and its suburbs.

The proposal comes within the ambit of a strategic initiative by the General Headquarters to contain the number of road accidents in the emirates roads.

Captain Hussain Ahmed Al Harthi, head of the department of traffic engineering and road safety said that the directorate had formulated strategies and adopted priorities aimed at curbing accidents and traffic violations.

One of the priorities is to prepare and conduct a comprehensive study for installing radars on roads in keeping with the technical standards applied internationally, he said.

Radars will be installed at places that witnessed frequent instances of over speeding especially in the vicinity of residential and commercial areas, interchanges, flyovers and other spots which were shown to be accident prone in the statistical study, he added.

The total number of violations recorded in Abu Dhabi and its suburbs for exceeding the legal speed limits touched 271,756 during the period between January 1 and June 16 of the current year. The total number of red light violations recorded reached 2,689 during the month of May also, said Al Harthi.
