More cameras in the capital to catch traffic violations

No one will be able to escape traffic violations of jumping red lights starting next week as cameras fitted at junctions becomes operational and any object jumping a red signal will be caught red handed.

Captain Husssain Ahmed Al Harethi, Head of road engineering section at the traffic and patrol department said the new system was a part of a strategy aimed at curbing road accidents in the capital city and its suburbs.

Road accidents occurring at signals are considered to be the most dangerous ever. These types of accidents often result in injuries and most often deaths as a result of the strong impact especially when it is a head on collision after jumping the red signal. Said captain Harethi.

He warned motorist against speeding at junctions to cross the signal while it changes from green to yellow, this act he said increases the risk of collision with vehicles coming from other directions.

The official said jumping red signal resulted in 137 accidents since the beginning of this year, killing two persons and injuring 290 others. Last year jumping red signal registered 2404 offences, said he.

The cameras have been electronically programmed to catch red light jumpers .they are linked to central data network at the traffic department. Violations will be registered automatically in the vehicles record. The system has been implemented in cooperation with the Municipalities, Agricultural department and the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police.
