2007 see drop in road accidents and causalities
Fatalities caused by road accidents in UAE dropped to 829 in 2007 from 878 in 2006 according to a senior ministry of interior official
6,813 accidents were occurred in 2007 killing 829 persons and injuring 10,526 compared to 8,443 accidents claiming 878 lives and injuring 10,674 in 2006,said Col.Gaith Al Zaabi,director of the traffic and patrols department.
Nationality wise 25 percent of the fatalities and injuries were of UAE nationals in 2007 were 186 nationals were killed in road accidents he said. Non compliance with traffic rules, over speeding, not leaving enough space between vehicles and apathy to other road users were the major causes of these accident, he said.
A new federal law which will come into force from March this year will see heavy penalties imposed on erring motorists and we are also streamlining strategies to reduce the road accidents by five percent in 2008, he added.
