Pedestrian causalities have increased by 20 percent from the last year to 647 pedestrians being involved in various kinds of accidents .A total of 91 persons were killed during the year 2007 an increase from 61 last year.
Serious injuries have gone up to 91 from 83 last year. Among the people involved in road accidents national topped the list followed by Pakistanis and Indians.
New law on pedestrian safety will be effective from March first which envisages strict enforcement of penalties for both the careless pedestrians as well as the motorists, said Colonel Hamed Al Shamsi, director of the traffic department. People caught jaywalking in Abu Dhabi streets will be fined 50dhs from today, he added. The Abu Dhabi traffic department will soon launch a pedestrian safety campaign involving all the road users to reduce the accidents involving pedestrians
