New strategy aims to bring down crime

The five year strategy of Abu Dhabi Police aims to bring down the crime rate in the emirate. The strategy for 2008-2012 was launched last week by Interior minister HH Lt.General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The Police will work towards bringing down the crime rate into 5pc every 1000 person living in the emirate. To achieve this goal, the general directorate of police plans to modernise its criminal investigation methodology and will upgrade its forensic laboratories, said Police officials.

Acting Head of Criminal Evidence Directorate Lt.Col. Abdul Rahman Al Hamadi said that in order to resurrect errorless evidence found from the crime sites, the police have plans to use modern techniques of criminal evidence and will build a genetic fingerprint data base.

The AD police have ambitious plans to absorb all the latest developments in the criminal science, and have sent 30 cadets to various institutions of high reputation in Europe and USA for higher studies and training.

Sheikh Saif has given directives to set up two additional forensic laboratories in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.Al Hamadi said that nearly 5000 cases were resolved by the forensic laboratories during last year in the emirate.

Drunk driving was one of the two prime reasons for the withdrawal of a total of 111 driver's licences in Abu Dhabi since the new traffic rule took effect earlier last month.

Overtaking by trucks posing hazard to other road users also prompted the traffic patrol to seize 41 licences during this period, according to the Chief of the Capital traffic and patrol section.

Lt.Col. Mohammed Dhahi said that a total of 14349 tickets were issued in the Abu Dhabi emirate for various traffic violations. A total of 9 licences were withdrawn after the drivers exhausted the maximum limit of 24 black points over a period of time since 1st March.

The traffic intelligence will ensure that those, whose licences were withdrawn, are abiding by the rules of the punishment imposed on them, warned the official.
