Security is as much about being prepared as it is about being responsive. To strategically enhance the security of the United Arab Emirates, the Ministry of the Interior has deployed a state-of-the-art face recognition system using advanced, proven technology to protect the borders of the United Arab Emirates as well as its critical infrastructure and key assets.
An Ideal Identifier
The Human Face All people have an innate ability to recognize faces. The Community Protection Face Recognition System enhances the ability technologically-using sophisticated software to scan images of individual faces for analysis and identification. It uses sensitive cameras to capture the faces of people whether they are up close or at a distance, in motion or standing still.
With only a brief look from the individual in the direction of the camera, facial characteristics such as the position, size and shape of the eyes, nose, cheekbones and jaw are recorded and the image is instantly secured. Biometric software allows for analysis and evaluation of the image by anyone: technicians do not need extensive training, unlike with other biometric technology. This makes the Community Protection Face Recognition System-in addition to being highly accurate exceptionally simple to use.
A World First
The Community Protection Face Recognition System is the first of its kind in the world. Its unique features include:
-
Machine-vision cameras that capture facial images through real-time facial image capture and enhancement technology.
-
High resolution image capture technology for facial image enrolment well ahead of current international standards for national identification and security databases.
-
Advanced and highly accurate detection technology that instantly locates and retains a complete set of key facial characteristics during the enrolment process.
-
Special technology for attracting subjects' attention to realize full-frontal images automatically.
-
Compensation technology that secures high-quality facial images in varying lighting conditions.
-
Pose detection and quality assessment technology to instantly capture optimal facial images.
-
Distortion-free digital technology designed to automatically deliver full-frontal facial images for optimum facial recognition.
-
Facial forensics including distortion-free digital head turning and digitally simulated muscle movements to adjust expressions.
-
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Standards Organization (ISO) both recognize the effectiveness of biometric face recognition technology, considering it the global standard.
An Historic Deployment
The Community Protection Face Recognition initiative was inspired by the President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as part of a plan of comprehensive national critical infrastructure protection system. It was launched on July 14th, 2008 at Abu Dhabi International Airport by Hi Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Under the leadership of His Highness Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior, the first phase of the project will be deployed around the UAE, to further enhance the security of the country, by monitoring the borders to detect the entry of wanted or expelled people.
